The outgoing Chancellor and ÖVP boss was very emotional in his last podcast and confirmed NEOS’ criticism. “It was clear to Babler that he was not willing to compromise.”
Karl Nehammer says goodbye to top politics. The ÖVP politician wrote a final podcast – it turned out to be an emotional piece. He says he can’t exactly describe his emotional state. “I did everything with a lot of passion. And I’m sorry for how it turned out. I have been associated with the People’s Party since I was fourteen and am involved. It was extremely honorable and emotional to say goodbye now.”
Nehammer also stated that he would not make any further comments publicly in the future. “It’s replaceable, and I don’t want to become a balcony muppet.”

But he once again describes his last hours in top politics. Why did the negotiations fail? “We made good progress. But the process was bumpy. Because of different ideologies. I can understand NEOS to some extent.” The views of SPÖ leader Andreas Babler were often incomprehensible. “It was clear to Babler that he was not willing to make compromises.” The SPÖ then saw a revival of class struggle, including gift and inheritance taxes or other anti-investment policies.
The ÖVP wanted to set preconditions to strengthen the location’s competition. “I’m just glad that in all these discussions I had witnesses that the Social Democrats will not go along with it.”
The advisors and whisperers around Andreas Babler were ultimately responsible for the failure. If the sensible group of the Reds had been in front of him, everything would have been concluded long ago – including the NEOS. Negotiations require discipline. An appointment was then made for Friday evening, but the Social Democrats did not show up. In any case, he himself, Nehammer, received the full support of his party.
When saying goodbye, Nehammer says: “It was an honor.” The podcast can be listened to on all common platforms, such as Spotify.
