After the turbulence within the party in recent weeks, the FPÖ leadership showed unity on Wednesday afternoon before the presidency meeting in Vienna. The priority is to “set the course for a successful political autumn,” party leader Herbert Kickl said down.
Viennese FPÖ boss Dominik Nepp said the mood within the party was “excellent as always”. Lower Austrian party chairman Udo Landbauer and general secretary Michael Schnedlitz also described the vote as “very good” and spoke of “business as usual”.
Haimbuchner: “We are a loyal state party – we always have been”
Upper Austrian party chairman Manfred Haimbuchner emphasized: “We are a loyal state party – we always have been.” The third chairman of the National Council, Norbert Hofer, said he had the impression that the presidency united behind Kickl.
Causa Jenewein and the design of an advertisement against the Viennese FPÖ
Recently, there has been a lot of rumbling within the PVV because the prosecutor’s office accidentally found a draft advertisement with accusations of misuse of funds against representatives of the Viennese FPÖ on the premises of former MP and later FPÖ employee Hans-Jörg Jenewein. Investigators assume that Jenewein, a close confidant of Kickl, is the author.
Hofer: “So it shall be”
He dismissed speculation that Kickl himself should have known something about this ad or was even behind it. Kickl said he wasn’t made aware of the ad, so Hofer said, “That’s the way it will be.” Jenewein left the party anyway and official measures were also taken. A few days later, Jenewein’s suicide attempt was revealed.
The federal party, in particular, has tried to calm things down in recent days, calling it a “constructed campaign” because “the system” in the federal presidential election campaign was “slowly getting nervous”.
Federal party conference on September 17 as an acid test for Kickl
So far, no state party has publicly questioned Kickl as party leader, but there is some grumbling behind closed doors. The long-planned federal party conference on Sept. 17 will provide at least one indication of how satisfied the party is with Kickl. In his first presidential election at an extraordinary party conference in June 2021, Kickl achieved 88.24 percent.
