The ATP was delivered this Monday to the Spaniards Carlos Alcaraz the trophy that identifies him as world number one, the youngest to access that position after this September US Open with 19 years.
On the main court of the Paris Masters, the ATP honored the Murcian with a song in a short ceremony ‘eye of the tiger’ -a tennis player’s favorite- as a backdrop.
“It’s a dream come true, when I was a child I wanted to be number one and be a Grand Slam champion. Everything happened so fast. It’s so much fun and I’m so happy to share it with all of you. See you on Wednesday,” he said in English. Alcaraz, who will make his debut that day against the Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka in the second round of the Paris-Bercy tournament.
At 19 years, 4 months and 7 days, Alcaraz (May 5, 2003) was the youngest to be proclaimed number one. He got it on September 12 of this year, when the classification was updated after his victory in New York.
The Spanish beat the Australian record Lleyton Hewitt, which increased to 20 years, 8 months, and 23 days in 2001.
The current ATP ranking system was established in 1973.
Alcaraz is the fourth Spaniard to reach number one, then Carlos MoyaHis trainer Juan Carlos Ferrero and Rafael Nadal.
