Mateu Lahoz will direct Netherlands-Argentina

FIFA has chosen Antonio Mateu Lahoz to direct Friday’s World Cup round of 16 clash in Qatar between the Netherlands and Argentina. Therefore, Leo Messi, Memphis Depay and Frenkie de Jong, as well as other players from both teams currently or in the past enrolled in LaLiga teams, will once again meet the Valencian referee in a top-level match .

Mateu Lahoz will be assisted on the wings by his compatriots Pau Cebrián and Roberto Díaz; the fourth referee is South African Victor Gomes; the American Kyle Atkins will be the reserve referee; also the Spaniard Alejandro Hernández Hernández is on VAR; AVAR is Canadian Drew Fischer; the offside VAR is the Italian Alessandro Giallantini; and VAR support is Chilean Julio Bascuñán.

Mateu Lahoz has passed FIFA’s first cut since the World Cup’s round of 16 dispute ended as 16 of the 36 designated referees have returned to their countries, leaving 20 to direct the quarterfinal matches through to the final.

In the group stage, Mateu Lahoz officiated the Qatar-Senegal and Iran-United States matches, while FIFA did not entrust him with directing any of the round of 16 matches.

For his part, the Englishman will be in charge of doing justice to Croatia-Brazil, the other World Cup quarterfinal match to be played on Friday.
