The most positive thing for Newcastle in their return to the Champions League is undoubtedly to scratch a point at San Siro, where Milan were very good but Nick Pope was unable to succeed between the sticks (0-0).
It is not the level of possession that Piolo’s team dominates, but it is more the chances and steals from his rival after the loss. Furthermore, if this football thing is mathematical, the Rossoneri will come out on top and by a few goals at half-time, as they almost literally crush Eddie Howe’s men.
Pope was outstanding in the first half hour of the game. If Milan did not take the lead, it was clearly the fault of the English goalkeeper, who had useful interventions, but also because of a worrying lack of punch. In a series of vertical and accurate attacks, Milan stepped into the opponent’s area without stopping and where the Newcastle goalkeeper could not reach, Schär did so, taking a shot from Krunic over the line.
Clearly frustrated, the Italian team went into the break after accumulating endless chances, while the English only had one shot from Murphy that didn’t even hit the target. In this situation, Eddie Howe wanted to turn the pressure on and he did so in the minutes at the start of the second half, but that didn’t help the team put together passes on the ball to find a very isolated Isak up top.
Milan dominated again as the minutes went by, although tired legs meant their attacks were not as accurate. And not only that, but the lack of a goal has been compounded by injuries to Loftus-Cheek, who has been the highlight, and Maignan, both due to muscle issues.
Like the script of a horror movie, the last game was for Newcastle and thanks to Sportiello, who gave Longstaff a good hand, otherwise the joke spoke for itself. In the end the scoreboard did not move and everything was resolved in a bitter draw for Milan.
