the Romanian Simona Halepamassing twelve consecutive Wimbledon wins, and Elena Rybakinathe first Kazakh in the Grand Slam semifinals, entered the top four at the London Grand Slam on Wednesday.
Halep, who has not lost a game here since 2018 and became champion in 2019, defeated the American Amanda Anisimova very easy (6-2 and 6-4). The Romanian took the first set in just half an hour and rose 5-1 in the second.
However, as the defeat drew to a close, Anisimova bounced back in three straight games, leaving Halep 5-4 up and on serve. The American was placed 0-40, with three break balls, but lost the final five points of the match and bid farewell to his first quarterfinal at Wimbledon.
Halep has two more games to retain the title he won in 2019, after he missed last year due to injury.
Her rival in the semifinals was Elena Rybakina, born in Moscow and nationalized Kazakh (she does not enter into a veto against the organization’s Russian tennis players because of the invasion of Ukraine), who returned to Ajla Tomljanovic (4-6, 6-2 and 6-3) to put his country in the semifinals of a Grand Slam for the first time.
Rybakina defeated a Tomljanovic who made an almost perfect first set, without allowing the break point to his service, but fell from the second set.
The Kazakh faced Halep three times, always on the hard court, with a 2-1 advantage for the Romanian.
