Pawel Fajdek expanded Poland’s world hegemony in the hammer discipline by throwing 81.98 meters that hit him in Eugene the fifth consecutive world title, ahead of his countryman Wojciech NowickiOlympic champion, who threw 81.03.
Three other finalists put the ball over the 80-meter line, but the bronze medal went to Norwegian Heivind HenriksenOlympic runner-up in Tokyo, with a shot of 80.87.
At the start of the third round, the final exactly reflected the last Olympic podium: Nowilcki dominated with 81.03, followed by Henriksen (80.87) and Fajdek (80.58). No one had exceeded 80 meters up to that point.
But on that third turn, four-time champion Fajdek led with a shot of 81.98, the best in the world this season, doubling his bet for a fifth crown. Two other finalists, French Quentin Bigot (80.24) and Hungarian Bence Halasz (80.15), also exceeded 80 meters.
The top ranking has not changed in the last two rounds.
Chilean Humberto Mansilla, with a best throw of 73.91 in the first round, missed the cut. He finished tenth.
