“It was a productive Friday and we tried a few different things in terms of car set-up.” said Fernando Alonso at the end of the first day of free practice of the 2022 F1 Hungarian GP. The Asturian driver finished 10th in the first session, where he did not look too comfortable in the car, practicing set-up changes. And in the afternoon session, the man from Oviedo showed remarkable progress in his Alpine, finishing sixth, 0″604 off the best time.
The Spaniard is optimistic ahead of the weekend. However, this Friday McLaren showed a lot of potential to prove this Saturday, a day where everything can change due to the rain that Fernando wants to take advantage of.
“The weather looks very changeable this Saturday and Sunday, so who knows what we will face, but we compiled good data and ran a smooth program in both training sessions. The car feels pretty good and it’s nice to drive, so let’s see what we can do tomorrow. I must say it was also great to drive through Budapest on my birthday! added the Asturian. This Saturday there is a high chance of rain for ‘qualy’. If qualifying is in the wet, the Spaniard looks to surprise again as he did at Silverstone recently.
Esteban Ocon: “It’s great to drive through Budapest again because it brings back so many great memories! In terms of our career, it’s good to have two training sessions under our belt. We are still unsure about the weather forecast for tomorrow and today may be the only dry race we have before qualifying or even the race. We got a good understanding of different things, which puts us in good shape for the rest of the weekend. As we know, the rain here can make things interesting, so let’s see how it works and see what we can achieve.”
Pat Fry, Technical Director: “Today was particularly challenging because the grip on the track was very low which made it difficult for the drivers. That is an issue that most of the other teams have also struggled with, but the track will continue to clean up and improve session after session. We’ll keep an eye on the weather as the conditions seem to change a lot. There’s a good chance of rain tomorrow, possibly for qualifying, and we’ve already shown this year that we can be competitive in the wet. Then keeping an eye we have Sunday where the conditions will be cooler than today. As always, we have a lot of learning to do to be better prepared for both qualifying and the race, and I’d say we’re in good shape as the things.”
