Delays and price increases in the requested caravan sector

Date:

The lack of chassis is causing long delays in deliveries from 8 to 18 months and inflation is hitting the sector hard with price increases of up to 20 or 30%

The caravan sector, at its peak of public interest and demand, is not at its peak. According to the Spanish Association of Caravan Industry and Trade (Aseicar) and after 6 consecutive months of declines, registrations will be reduced by almost half from 2021 in 2022. And what’s worse: the predictions for 2023
they are not meant to get better.

Firstly, the Covid health crisis and the confinement in much of Europe caused the closure of dozens of factories and the shortage of important parts such as windows, kitchens, sinks, tables… After production resumed, the huge bottleneck arise. However, the industrial crisis of microchips, electronic components and, more seriously, chassis followed.

And it’s that at
miss the chassis on which the vehicles are mounted, very few other parts of the structure can be requisitioned. In addition, the manufacturers do not even have an estimated date of receipt of the chassis, largely due to its diversity. The main European factories are running at 50-60% of their average capacity. Fiat in Italy, Ford in Turkey and even Mercedes in Germany have been forced to shut down their assembly lines for weeks and continue to suffer today.
component deficiency.

These problems in the manufacture of caravan vehicles cause a lack of stock at dealers, delays in the delivery of purchased vehicles and higher prices. Currently, delivery times of 8 to 18 months are given for new vehicles, causing significant inconvenience to customers who:
pay an average of 70,000 euros. Faced with this situation, the buyer opts for the second-hand market, where prices have also risen.
shot between 20 and 30%.

Currently, a buyer who does not want to wait a year for the delivery of his new motorhome for 60,000 euros chooses to buy it 2-3 years old for 55,000 or 5 years for 50,000. In many cases they go to the purchase between national individuals with the consequent risk of acquiring a vehicle without warranty, without the mandatory overhauls and in a condition, often, that does not agree with the stated price.

Considering the latter,
there is a risk. Others buy vehicles abroad that are older than 10, 15 or older, at the risk of not passing the ITV in Spain, not having spare parts in our country or being vehicles with forged documents or of dubious origin. In addition, the purchase of foreign vehicles that do not have the possibility to obtain the environmental label is detected, which prevents the use and circulation in many cities of the country of origin or Spanish.
