The General Directorate of Traffic explains in which cases it is more dangerous to travel both by vehicle and on foot
Citizens must travel to their workplace every day by public transport or their own vehicle. Many have to get up early enough to go to the office or the city where they work. That is why the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) calls for great caution on the road, as a large number of people have to leave every day under unfavorable conditions.
With the arrival of the cold, stormy days, foggy days and wet and slippery asphalt follow each other, which can make driving difficult. The DGT warns that it is very important to drive according to the traffic rules and the signs that appear on the road at all times. Do not only pay attention to the road, but also ensure good visibility. According to the DGT, the phrase most often repeated after a traffic accident is “I didn’t see it”.
To ensure that neither motorists nor pedestrians get into accidents, it is very important to pay close attention and follow the signs at all times. If the driver is tired or under the influence of alcohol or another drug, the risk of an accident is greater. Despite these specific cases, the DGT highlights two times of the day when it is easier to get into an accident, both as a driver and as a pedestrian. Drivers should remember that pedestrians are the most vulnerable road users, so extreme caution is advised.
The DGT warns that the most critical hours for traffic accidents are at dawn and dusk. According to the DGT, a study conducted by several ophthalmological experts from the University of Helsinki, almost 24% of traffic accidents are related to non-perception or loss of visual attention.
Therefore, “the most critical hours” for traffic accidents are precisely “when the light decreases”, that is, sunrise or sunset, said the President of the College of Opticians-Optometrists of the Valencian Community, Andrés Gené. “Low visual ability limits perception, leading to inadequate visibility of signs and road elements, distractions and miscalculations,” concludes Gené.
To avoid accidents at all times, drivers must maintain the speed indicated on the road at all times. This will help to timely detect any problems on the road or if a pedestrian is about to cross the street. On the other hand, if you drive too fast, the driver may not be able to react in an emergency situation.
