Christmas 2022 releases the blood alcohol content 0.0

This will be Christmas under the new Traffic and Road Safety Act, which came into effect in March this year. Between heavier sanctions and some controversial bans, such as not exceeding the speed limit on a road or overtaking, the figure of 0.0 grams of alcohol per liter of blood appears for the first time.

The effectiveness of this new standard has yet to be demonstrated and the DGT themselves stated, prior to its adoption, that they could change aspects of it if it did not have the desired effect of reducing road deaths.

The correlation between alcohol and deaths in road accidents has been amply demonstrated – in 2020, 63.9% of the 597 drivers killed tested positive for breath analysis – and although the new traffic law still allows driving with a certain blood alcohol level , the official position of the DGT is
to absolute reduction.

Before March of this year, Traffic was only thinking of two types of drivers: generals and novices and professionals, who have more restrictions on their alcohol content. So respectively
they can drive at 0.5 grams and 0.3 grams per liter.

What the new law introduces is the category of underage driver regardless of the type of vehicle being driven, be it a moped, a scooter or a bicycle. Here the legislators have been blunt and they are not allowed to drive after consuming alcohol.

In particular, the new traffic law has tightened the penalties for the most dangerous behaviors: drunk driving and distracted driving. If the rate of 0.0 is exceeded, minors can be fined a minimum of 500 euros and, depending on the rate, a maximum of 1,000 euros.

The latter figure is also applied if they refuse to submit to breathalyzer tests and if they test positive for alcohol or drugs, the vehicle will be immobilized, whether it be a bicycle or a scooter.
