Just rescued – boys climbed in mountain cave quest

Date:

Because they apparently wanted to find caves, three young people aged 14 to 16 climbed a wall in Breitenbach in the Tyrolean lowlands on Tuesday evening. Unable to advance or retreat on the steep terrain, the boys finally made a distress call – just in time.

Looking for caves, three boys in Breitenbach got into trouble in the mountains on Tuesday evening. Two 16-year-olds and a 14-year-old climbed a mountain from a gravel pit. “At a certain point, however, they didn’t dare to go back and forth,” says Markus Callegari, operational manager of the mountain rescue service in Kramsach and the surrounding area.

Boys alerted rescuers in time
Callegari arrived with his team after the teenagers sounded the alarm in their distress. “They just started the rescue chain in daylight,” he explains. As a result, a flight with the police helicopter “Libelle” was still possible. The helicopter crew was able to climb up to the boys, rescue them with a rope, and fly them back down into the valley.

Eleven mountain rescuers nevertheless escaped to safety, but remained on the ground. “The ascent would have been a security risk in the area,” explains the operations manager.

Without mountain equipment on rough terrain
The mountain that the youths climbed in Breitenbach is steep, rocky and covered with mountain pines. According to Callegari, the teens were out in casual clothes, not wearing mountaineering boots.
