Climate activists from the “Last Generation” group demonstrated in front of a famous fresco in the northern Italian city of Padua, triggering a police operation. According to videos of the movement online, two young men chained themselves to a railing in the Cappella degli Scrovegni, a chapel known for its murals, on Sunday.
As tourists walked through the hall to admire artwork, protesters warned about climate change. Finally, police officers carried the activists out of the church. It was another peaceful protest by the “Ultima Generazione”, as the movement is called in Italian, for well-known art.
On Thursday, activists demonstrated at the world-famous Vatican Museums in Rome in front of the Laocoon Group, a major portrayal of the agony of the Trojan priest Laocoon. “No Gas e No Carbone” (No Gas and No Coal) read a sign held up by a man and a woman.
A campaign at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence on June 22 for the painting “Primavera” by Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli also caused a stir. With the peaceful protests for world-famous works of art, the activists want to seize another opportunity to draw attention to their demands.
