Help too late – 15 meter emergency ascent in Lake Attersee to death

Date:

Unclear underwater emergency at Unterach in Upper Austria: A diving student has had an accident in Lake Attersee. The German (54) still reacted to the water surface, but did not survive the diving accident. An autopsy should now clarify what went so drastically wrong during this dive in the Attersee, which took his life on Sunday afternoon.

A German diving instructor and two students entered the lake at Unterach, at the Kohlbauernaufsatz dive site. They had deflated their vests to descend. But already after a minute and a half, just 15 meters below the surface of the water, there were complications.

A 54-year-old German woman who had already made about 15 dives had problems and came to the surface. The diving instructor followed her and was still able to address her: “I can’t breathe,” said the diving student. The teacher and the second student quickly brought the Bavarian from near Simbach am Inn to the coast and a distress call was made.

ordered autopsy
However, the woman’s condition quickly deteriorated and when paramedics and the rescue helicopter arrived at the accident site, the diving buddies tried to bring the 54-year-old back to life. The rescuers took over the resuscitation efforts, but had to give up. All help came too late for the Germans.

The prosecutor’s office has ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death. It is currently suspected that an acute medical emergency was the cause and that the emergency ascent was orderly.

First fatal accident this year
Incidentally, this year was the first fatal diving accident at Lake Attersee. The year 2005 was the darkest year for the underwater sportsmen who travel to the Attersee from all over Europe. At that time, eight people were killed in nine diving accidents.
