The Sovereign Coalition has made this consideration in a statement released following Eustat’s publication today of the Data on tourist activities in July in Euskadiaccording to which San Sebastián registered a 22.8% increase in the number of visitors compared to the same month last year and a 35.8% increase in the number of overnight stays.

For the main political faction of the opposition in Donostia, “the tourism model implemented by Eneko Goia during his mayorship has failed and it is impossible to make it without changing course 180 degrees”, so “there are “concrete, ambitious measures are needed, which learn from the mistakes” of other places.

“There is no city that can withstand sustained tourism growth of 10 to 20% per year”warned EH Bildu, pointing out that “the trend” will be to continue growing as, according to what he claims, the capital of Gipuzkoa will register “the opening of thousands of additional hotel beds.”

After rejecting the “unlimited” growth of tourism, he has chosen to use the San Sebastian Tourism Master Plan renewal process to “correct what has been done wrong so far”.

Among other things, he defended enter the tourist taxa tax that EH Bildu has chosen “from the beginning”, although it believes that it should be levied “progressively” depending on the category determined by the stars for the accommodation.

As for the destination of the money raised, he pointed out that it should not be used to “continue to promote the city”, but to “finance the increase in the cost of public services” such as garbage collection or urban cleaning, for vocational training of workers in the sector and above all to “make the change of course” and “build a truly sustainable tourism model”.

“The mayor’s rhetorical defense of the city tax remains a toast to the sun if it is not accompanied by concrete facts,” concluded EH Bildu.
