Offender caught – man threatened passersby with fake gun in Graz

Date:

Tuesday night there was a large police presence in the Wetzelsdorf district of Graz. The emergency services had to go to Laudongasse because of an alleged gunman. The suspect was eventually caught in the basement of a residential building. The exact background was initially completely unclear.

At around 10 p.m., witnesses in Laudongasse saw an initially unknown person threatening a man with a gun. As a result, the man ran out into the street to haphazardly threaten several passers-by with guns drawn. He allegedly pointed the firearm, which looked deceptively real, directly at the people and threatened to shoot them.

Public transport temporarily suspended
About a dozen police patrols from Graz, as well as rapid response troops (SRK) and police dog patrols, arrived at the scene shortly after. According to witnesses, Cobra agents then searched the apartment building in which the suspect fled with the firearm. For the duration of the operation, public transport, including the tram connection, had to be temporarily shut down in the area of operations.

Perpetrators found in the basement
The 41-year-old suspect from Russia was eventually caught in the basement of the apartment building. The officers seized the previously used firearm (a CO2 weapon) and ammunition from the man who lives in Graz. Officials also found a so-called “tomahawk” in the 41-year-old known to police. There was already a gun ban against him.

suspected drug use
SRK officers then transferred the suspect to the police station, where he spent the night in custody. An interrogation of the man is scheduled for Wednesday. An alcohol test on the 41-year-old was negative. However, a rapid drug test brought the first indications of potentially addictive substance use.

What exactly led to the confrontation with the threatened passers-by is not yet known and is the subject of ongoing investigation. According to the initial findings, however, the suspect may not have known the person or only briefly. No one was injured in this incident.
