Pushkin and Tolstoy – Kiev government renames 95 streets and squares

Date:

Because of the war in Ukraine, the mayor of Kiev has renamed 95 streets and squares, with names reminiscent of Russia or the Soviet Union. For example, the names of the Russian writers Alexander Pushkin and Lev Tolstoy disappear from the cityscape.

Also hit by streets named after Soviet marshals from World War II or related to Russian cities such as Moscow and Magnitogorsk.

Criticism had led to a street being named after the Kiev-born writer Mikhail Bulgakov.

“Street of Heroes” under new names
In the future, the streets will be named after people and cities from Ukraine, for example, “Street of the Heroes of the Azov Regiment” – that is, after the volunteer battalion that fought, among other things, at the steel plant in Mariupol. “This is an important step towards reducing the lying manipulations and influence of the Russian aggressor on the interpretation of our history,” Kiev mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Thursday. With the 95 streets, the naming process is not yet complete.

vote via app
Earlier, more than 6.5 million people took part in a vote on a government smartphone app. Kiev itself has about three million inhabitants. The capture of the capital of Ukraine is considered an important goal of the war.
