The Almtalbahn in Pettenbach (Upper Austria) was closed for more than two hours – a local (72) in the car had overlooked the train and was severely trapped.
Saturday around 9:30 a.m. the train collided with the car at the unrestricted level crossing in Pettenbach. The car was dragged for almost 40 meters before the Almtalbahn came to a stop.
Helicopter use
The 72-year-old driver was seriously injured in the wreckage. The fire brigade had to cut open the roof of the VW to save them. When she was free, rescue helicopter “Martin 3” flew the senior to the hospital.
The railway had to be closed for more than two hours for the cleanup work. The wagon was so badly damaged in the collision that it could no longer continue. No passengers on the train were injured.
