In a zoo in Ghana, a burglar chose dangerous prey – and paid for this decision with his life. The man wanted to steal a rare white lion cub. An adult lion prevented the theft by tearing up the intruder who had entered the enclosure.
The tragic incident took place at the zoo in the Ghanaian capital Accra. Zoo staff saw the middle-aged man climb over the security barrier. According to “Bild” it was a six meter high wire mesh fence. But the zookeepers could do nothing more to protect the burglar from the big cats.
“The intruder was attacked and injured by one of the lions,” Ghana’s Forest Commission said. The man eventually succumbed to his injuries. To get the lifeless body out of the enclosure, the lion, a lioness, and their two cubs had to be confined in a cage for a short time.
The man apparently wanted to steal one or both of the white lion cubs that were born in November 2021. These specimens are so rare that they are often targeted by poachers. It is unclear whether the lion or the lioness attacked the man. Police have been notified and are investigating the accident.
According to the Global White Lion Protection Trust, there are only about a dozen white lions left in the wild.
