The Foreign Ministers of the States of the European Union have agreed suspend the agreement on the issuance of visas signed with Russia in 2007, so the procedures will be more difficult and expensive.
The political agreement does not mean a total travel ban to the EU, but it will more obstacles for Russian citizens seeking a permit for stays up to 90 days. This agreement was already partially suspended for civil servants and businessmen, but is now completely suspended.
“Member States believe that they cannot continue as if nothing had happened. We have agreed politically that something must be done,” the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy announced, Joseph Borrell.
The representative has motivated the decision because, as he said, there has been a “significant” increase in border crossings from Russia since mid-July, which has become a “security risk”. “Also, we have seen many Russians travel for leisure, to go shopping, as if there is no war going on in Ukraine,” he added.
In addition, the foreign ministers are calling on the EU to study the situation and also take measures against existing visas. “There is a common understanding that they also need to be addressed and this situation needs a common approach,” Borrell added.
With the suspension of the agreement between the EU and the Russian Federation, European citizens who want to travel to Russia will predictably also face more difficulties.
The ministers also agreed that passports issued by Russia in the occupied territories of Ukraine will not be recognized in the European Union.
