Two embassy employees have been killed in an attack in the Afghan capital, Kabul, according to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “Two embassy employees were killed in the attack. There are also casualties among Afghan civilians,” the ministry said in Moscow on Monday.
The attack had therefore taken place in the immediate vicinity of the entrance to the consulate. According to the ministry, the embassy is in close contact with the Afghan security authorities.
The militant Islamist Taliban have returned to power in Afghanistan since August last year after international forces withdrew. Since then, there have been multiple attacks on civilians by the Islamic State (IS) terrorist militia.
attacker shot
Afghan police had previously said a suicide bomber detonated explosives at the embassy entrance. The attacker was shot dead by guards before reaching the gate.
Russia is one of the few countries that still has an embassy in Kabul after the Taliban came to power a good year ago. Russia does not officially recognize the Taliban government. It is, however, still in talks with the Taliban about the supply of fuel and raw materials.
