French President Emmanuel Macron said this on Monday no new connections needed of gas with Spain because the current ones are far from saturation, and that the MidCat gas pipeline project is not justified for energy or environmental reasons.
Macron explained at a press conference on energy that the two gas pipelines currently connecting the two countries via Euskadi and Navarra are “underused” as since february they are used for 53%and that France exported gas to Spain in August and not the other way around.
Instead, he was in favor of “develop electrical connections with Spain” for the export of energy from renewable sources to Europe, he pointed out after a conversation with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz about the energy situation in Europe.
For example, it has supported the reform of the European electricity market to set prices “consistently” and in line “with production prices”.
Macron has also acknowledged that France needs “European solidarity with electricity”because more than half of the country’s nuclear reactors have been shut down for technical reasons.
