The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyenand the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, Joseph Borrellwill meet next Friday in Kiev with the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyconfirms a community spokesperson.
In this way, Brussels confirms the meeting when it reported the trip to Ukraine last Tuesday. This gesture of support comes on the day that it will be the 44th day since the start of the war and ahead of a donor conference to be held in Warsaw on Saturday to raise funds.
The Head of the Commission and the EU’s most important diplomatic officer are thus following in the footsteps of the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metzola, who last week became the first top bloc official to travel to Ukraine since the invasion began. Several European leaders had done it before, but on their own behalf and not on behalf of the Twenty-seven, as will be the case with von der Leyen and Borrell.
The EU today announced its fifth package of sanctions against Russia, including a ban on Russian coal.
