Two senior separatists were killed Friday in the Russian-occupied Luhansk region. They died in an explosion in the parquet. The Ukrainian side denies responsibility.
“Today, as a result of a terrorist act, Attorney General Sergey Gorenko and his deputy Yekaterina Steglenko died,” Luhansk separatist leader Leonid Pasechnik wrote on Telegram on Friday. Local media had previously reported an explosion at the prosecutor’s office.
Passechnik blamed the Kiev government for the attack, but the external adviser to the head of the Ukrainian presidential office denied involvement. The “liquidation” was due to a conflict in the local criminal environment, Mykhailo Podoliak wrote on Twitter.
Parts split off since 2014
The separatists had already split off parts of Luhansk and the neighboring Donetsk region from Ukraine in 2014. In early 2022, Russia recognized both regions as independent “people’s republics” amid international protests.
Another attack is said to have taken place in the southern Ukrainian port city of Berdyansk. According to Russian information, the deputy chief of the occupation administration, Oleg Boiko, and his wife Lyudmila were murdered there.
