Ukraine on Monday reported a rocket attack on the Pivdennoukrainsk nuclear power plant in the south of the country. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram Monday morning that Russia “would threaten the whole world” with another shelling of a nuclear power plant. Surveillance video (above) shows the detonation of the rocket, which landed 300 meters from the reactors.
The three reactors of the Piwdennoukrainsk nuclear power plant (nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine, please note) remained undamaged and are expected to function normally, Ukraine’s state-owned company Energoatom, which is responsible for operating all of the country’s nuclear power plants, said Monday.
The missile attack hit an industrial complex, which also includes the power station. The explosion destroyed more than 100 windows of buildings in the complex in the Mikolayiv Oblast – about 350 kilometers south of the capital Kiev – (photos above), Energoatom reports.
Energoatom calls attack ‘nuclear terrorism’
The attack also caused damage to a nearby hydroelectric power station. The reactors of the nuclear power plant were not affected, but power lines were, according to Energoatom. The Ukrainian state-owned company called the missile attack an act of “nuclear terrorism”.
