The legendary Liliputbahn in the Vienna Prater almost became a Brexit victim. Because the British company stopped exporting coal. Now came the saving eco idea. Don’t worry, it has nothing to do with nuclear power.
Since 1928, the old steam locomotives of the Minibahn in the Prater were powered by coal. Until now, the specialty briquettes in the best ride quality have been faithfully supplied by a British company. But then came Brexit and the energy transition, along with the accompanying (also militant) environmental protests against everything that seems fossil.
Climate-friendly alternative
“Our UK suppliers have reduced production and have completely shut down from the summer for smaller customers like us. That was it with the age-old tradition,” explains the Vienna Liliput director Anna Kleindienst-Jilly. But since the railway enthusiast also has a big heart for the environment, she went in search of a climate-friendly alternative together with her chief engineer Ronald Durstmüller.
Again this was found in the UK. On Saturday, the 98-year-old eco-rejuvenated rail lady set out on her maiden voyage — powered by briquettes made from pressed olive stones.
