A fire broke out in the infamous Evin prison in the north of the Iranian capital Tehran on Saturday night. Videos posted on social media show flames and a plume of black smoke over the detention center, where dozens of political prisoners are being held.
Gunshots and sirens can also be heard in the videos. According to eyewitnesses, special police units and rescue workers could be seen in front of the prison. Relatives of those imprisoned in Evin have gathered in front of the prison, it is said.
According to Alarabiya News, the fire was preceded by clashes between inmates and prison staff. The inmates set fire to a warehouse where prison clothing is stored, an official told Iran’s state news agency IRNA. “Currently, the situation is fully under control and there is peace in the prison and the fire brigade is putting out the fire,” he added.
