‘Empty gestures’ – Slovakian parliament rejects more LGBTIQA rights

Date:

The Slovak parliament has rejected a motion calling for the recognition of same-sex partnerships. Unmarried cohabiting couples, regardless of their sexual orientation, should have been given certain rights to which married couples are automatically entitled.

For example, they must have common property and be able to inherit from each other. The application for “living together in partnership” is roughly comparable to the registered partnership in Austria and was submitted by the liberal Freedom and Solidarity Party (SaS). However, it will not be implemented: only 50 of the 133 MPs present in parliament voted in favor on Wednesday.

Disappointment after attack on bar
Liberal media and representatives of the LGBTQIA scene were disappointed on Thursday. The English abbreviation LGBTQI stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans people, queer, intersex and asexual people. Just a week ago there was an attack on a gay bar in Bratislava. On the evening of October 12, a right-wing extremist shot and killed two men in front of the bar. A woman was seriously injured. The perpetrator then sent hate messages online and committed suicide.

In the days that followed, thousands of people demonstrated against hatred against sexual minorities. For example, the citizens’ initiative Inakost (other than his) organized protest meetings, hoping that the application would be accepted. “They (politicians, take note) are not even willing to take such a small step towards equality,” said Representative Martin Macko. After the assassination, numerous politicians expressed concern, but the gestures remained empty, representatives of the scene added.
