It’s stressful at Austria’s main train stations. People who have to catch the train. People are pouring out of the trains. The journey across the station square is even more stressful for travelers: drunks, drug addicts, beggars, increasing migration and petty criminals do not increase the ‘subjective sense of security’. A look at the crime statistics doesn’t make it any better objectively.
The drunkard sits in the middle of the station square in Salzburg and rattles to himself. He is surrounded by beer cans and an empty bottle of wine, which were previously emptied with a roar. A few meters away, a couple of bored youths are fighting each other and a young woman scarred by life is steaming cigarettes from passers-by who just want to quickly move on. No, slaloming from the adjacent shopping center to the venerable station concourse is not pleasant.
