Austria’s far-right scene — especially identitarian leader Martin Sellner — mingled with concerned protesters in Upper Austria’s St. Georgen im Attergau, who took to the streets for the refugee tent cause. There is also dissatisfaction with the tent camps in Tyrol.
Is this how Mayor Ferdinand Aigner envisioned the revolt against the refugee tents in his hometown of St. Georgen im Attergau? Concerned citizens and the ÖVP mayor marched side by side with the far-right scene from all over Austria against 17 refugee tents on the everyday national holiday. Among them was Martin Sellner, head of the Austrian Identitarian Movement.
For Home Secretary Karner, Sellner’s appearance was a welcome distraction. In principle he understands the citizens, but “I will not let the right-wing extremists or their slogans and their evil agitation influence me a millimeter on the path that is now necessary”.
Resistance to tents is also increasing in Tyrol
The protesters themselves did not seem to be bothered by the advance of the right-wing scene. The anger at her tent déjà vu is too great. Traun protester Christoph Stadlmann complained about the “continued violation of the law by the administration”. He wanted to “show the social tensions deliberately caused by the Minister of the Interior”. Nearly 1000 participants then marched towards the Westautobahn – there was no blockade.
It is not only in St. Georgen im Attergau that resentment about the tent camps is increasing. The mayor of Absam in Tyrol offers resistance. The tents in Absam are on the grounds of the local police academy, on federal property. They were posted on Thursday. The SPÖ mayor is now defending himself with a decision against the tents for asylum seekers. The new SPÖ Deputy Governor of Tyrol, Georg Dornauer, wants to clarify the tent case with Karner as soon as possible.
