Russia has denied reports that President Vladimir Putin offered talks with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy. “There was no specific message in this matter — there was no mention of it,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday over statements from Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embaló. In Moscow, Embalo only offered to convey Putin’s point of view on his next visit to Kiev.
At a press conference with Selenskyj in Kiev on Wednesday evening, Embaló said Putin had shown himself ready for talks. The president of Guinea-Bissau also currently heads the business of the West African Economic Zone Ecowas. In Moscow and Kiev, he mainly ensured that Ukrainian grain exports could continue under the supervision of the United Nations and Turkey. Russia threatens not to extend the program.
Recapture of the Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine
From Moscow’s point of view, talks with Ukraine would only make sense if Kiev accepted all Russian terms. Zelenskyy does not want to negotiate as long as the Russian war of aggression ends in the subjugation and destruction of Ukraine. He is counting on retaking the Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine.
