A day with a undertaker – will: A special coffin with a minibar

Date:

Funeral director Heini Altbart from Vienna reveals the strangest last wishes. Each has been fulfilled so far.

In addition to the cemetery, his shop on Waidhausenstraße in Penzing is Heini Altbart’s second home. Here he keeps his entire repertoire, from flowers to coffins. “The flowers are delivered fresh from the Netherlands twice a week,” says Heini. His employees then process them into beautiful flower decorations. The casket showroom is next door. Here are the different models of chests. From the American box to one made of larch or oak, the choice is large.

And that’s not all, there’s more in the box store not far from the store. About 300 coffins of various sizes are kept here. Of course, custom products are also made. “Once the next of kin had a minibar built into the coffin of the deceased,” recalls Heini. Another time, an elderly lady was put on peanut flips because she loved them so much. And in the funeral home there is already an Indian tent for a Winnetou fan. No wish was ever left unfulfilled.

Inflation also affects funerals
However, such special requests are becoming less and less, as the price increases are also being felt in the funeral industry. The price of a coffin has already risen by 10 percent. So far, Heini has not yet passed the prices on to his customers, but next year he will have to.

Expensive funerals are getting rarer
And he also noticed that customers are becoming more price sensitive. “A lot of old people save for their funerals for years, but none of the younger ones do,” says the 50-year-old. It was not uncommon for people with little or no money to come to him for their parents’ funeral. But also in this case you are well advised at Altbart. And there are a few alternatives, aside from the expensive funeral.
