A fire broke out in the popular Strombad Kritzendorf in Klosterneuburg in Lower Austria on Wednesday evening. The fire was brought under control after two hours. The firefighters were on duty until the early hours, FF spokesman Franz Resperger reported. The damage: several hundred thousand euros.
An observant municipal employee had noticed the fire and immediately alerted the emergency services. According to the police, the flames were discovered near garbage cans and a shelter for vehicles.
When the fire brigade was called around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, the phones rang every second to report the fire in the oldest settlement on the Danube in Lower Austria. “The pitch-dark sky over the Strombad Kritzendorf was brightly lit and the crackling of the fire could be heard almost everywhere,” Resperger says. Within minutes, 120 emergency services from five fire departments were deployed to extinguish the blaze.
“Metre-high flames”
A construction site of the municipality of Klosterneuburg and the adjacent historic clubhouse in the Donausiedlung went up in flames. “Due to the enormous heat development and meters high flames, an indoor attack was no longer an option, so the firefighters launched a massive outdoor attack with several nozzles,” the fire department spokesperson said.
Two buildings completely burned down
“It was not clear for a long time whether a single-family house standing next to the fire object could be saved from the flames,” the message reads. This was ultimately successful and the fire was also prevented from spreading to the historic Danube restaurant on the treppenweg. However, a warehouse and workshop wing of the municipality burned down completely and the clubhouse was also destroyed.
During the extinguishing work, water was discharged via a supply pipe from the Danube 200 meters away.
