facts
The Maldives with their picturesque beaches are a popular destination for luxury tourism, but Malé is one of the most populous cities in the world. About half of the 250,000 inhabitants are said to be guest workers from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Their poor living conditions came to light during the coronavirus pandemic as infections spread three times faster among them than among the local population.
Ten bodies have already been recovered. According to a security official, nine of the victims were from India and one from Bangladesh.
