More witnesses will be heard on the sixth day of the trial surrounding the death of 13-year-old Leonie. The three suspects allegedly drugged and raped the boy. The dose that the Afghans allegedly gave her would eventually have killed her. The charge is therefore rape resulting in death.
It should become clear on Monday whether the questioning of the second suspect by the police went correctly. The Afghan states in court that he was physically abused and put under pressure by officials. The interpreter would also have misunderstood him.
But she can’t confirm that: “In the beginning, the question is always asked whether the suspect understands the interpreter properly.” The second suspect said yes. He also signed his statement after it was translated back to him. The police officers who were present during the arrest and interrogation also cannot remember any abuse. “Did someone pressure him?” asks the judge. “No, that was not necessary,” said an official.
According to his responsibility in court, he claims to have had consensual sex with 13-year-old Leonie. He doesn’t want to know about the drugs that were administered to her and later led to her death. He told the police another version…
“Deputy Sheriff” messed things up
The National Criminal Investigation Department detectives also provide information about one of the witnesses who testified on the fifth day of the trial. The 22-year-old significantly helped police arrest the suspect – and led them to other witnesses. “The Witness received money for the effort and help rendered,” says an official. That is normal procedure. The 22-year-old received 500 euros for information that led to the arrest of a suspect in Austria. The State Criminal Police Office (LKA) paid him 1,000 euros for the arrest of the first suspect, who had fled to London.
“He always wanted more money and then he must have messed up a lot of things,” says an officer who led the interrogations on the witness stand. That is why he allegedly told the police that there were other people in the apartment. The 22-year-old also testified in court. “He then ran around playing deputy sheriff,” the police officer said.
Witness: “Neglected children” in the apartment
Something else emerges from the summons of the 22-year-old woman, who was said to have been in the apartment on the day of the crime. She was the ex-girlfriend of the second suspect and would have lived in the apartment for a long time. That’s why she knows all three Afghans. “If that’s really true, I want nothing to do with it,” says the young mother. Although she was also on the Danube Canal that day – where the suspect had picked up 13-year-old Leonie – she would not know the girl.
She knows about the second suspect: “He was always a nice person to me, but he had his own freak out.” His apartment was also “worse than a brothel.” “Stinky, dirty people” were constantly coming and going. “Some of them were neglected children.” The 22-year-old suspects they were there to buy drugs.
Experts and other witnesses have already been heard on the six days of the hearing so far. They all heavily charge the three defendants. According to experts, all three raped the 13-year-old. But they want to have had consensual sex with the girl. She would have taken the drugs herself. The cause of death was ultimately an overdose of MDA – which none of the Afghans want anything to do with. In panic, they leaned the dead Leonie against a tree on a green strip.
A ruling is expected on December 2, 2022.
