The gunsmith town of Ferlach in Carinthia is not doing Christmas lights this year. Christmas lights, stars, etc. stay in the garage. Only the Christmas tree in the main square will shine – but not as usual.
While in other municipalities the construction site employees are already busy putting up the Christmas lights, their Ferlach colleagues can take it a bit easier this year. Because where the illuminated letters “Merry Christmas” usually adorn the entrance to the gunsmith town, everything is still undecorated. And it will stay that way.
Energy crisis as a trigger
“The Christmas tree is only lit in the main square,” explains the mayor of Ferlach, Ingo Appé, in the interview with “Krone”. But even there, the community is at a low ebb. LED lamps are used instead of conventional light bulbs. “Nevertheless, there should be a Christmas atmosphere in Ferlach and at the same time we can keep power consumption to a minimum,” says the village manager. The illuminated winter motifs on the street lamps around the center of Ferlach will also be omitted this year.
The reason for this approach is not a lack of money in the municipal treasury, but the energy crisis. “With this campaign we just want to set an example in the field of energy saving,” says Appé.
Lanterns are turned off earlier
In the neighboring municipality of Feistritz im Rosental, energy has already been saved for a month. “Our lanterns go out at 10 p.m.,” said Mayor Sonya Feinig. However, the Rosengemeinde will not be able to do without the Christmas lights this year.
