Dramatic scenes took place Monday morning after a fire in a residential building in Vienna. A fire in the basement had led to a completely smoke-filled stairwell in a very short time. On the top floor of the building, a woman’s act of desperation has just been prevented…
The emergency services were called to the house on Sechshauser Straße in Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus at 9:30 am. A fire broke out in the basement of the building. Within a short time, the acrid smoke had spread through the stairwell, blocking the residents’ escape route. When the fire brigade arrived on the third floor, a woman was already sitting on the window sill of the apartment and wanted to jump.
However, the helpers managed to calm her down and persuaded her to hold on a little longer. Shortly afterwards, the fire brigade entered the woman’s apartment and freed her from the building with a fire escape hood. Other residents were similarly brought to safety and handed over to the special task force of the Vienna Professional Rescue Service.
Fire claimed three injuries
This cared for five people in an aid van. Two affected women were taken to hospitals with smoke inhalation, as well as a young man who injured his finger, Corina Had, spokeswoman for Vienna’s professional rescue service, reported. According to the fire service, he caught it when he escaped from a window on the ground floor.
The fire in the basement has now been extinguished and the house has been made smoke-free with powerful fans. 27 firefighters were present until 11:50 p.m. The cause of the fire is still unclear, the National Investigation Department has taken over the investigation.
