The DGT has announced that it will increase the control of vans this week. A type of vehicle involved in 2021
in more than 8,000 traffic accidents killing 170 people (including 67 van occupants and 103 other vehicle or pedestrian occupants involved in said accidents) and hospitalizing 192 van occupants injured.
During the next seven days, which also coincide with the celebration
of Black Fridaythe campaign will set up checkpoints on all types of roads, especially on conventional roads, but also in areas close to industrial sites, loading bays or shopping centres.
Due to the use of vans as a working tool, among others due to the increase in electronic commerce that carries out the transport of its merchandise in this type of vehicle, the number of registrations has increased significantly in recent years, from 54,700 in 2012 to 108,210 in 2021.
The vans that
represent 7% of the national park With just over 2.5 million vehicles, they were involved in 9% of road accidents and 11% of deaths in 2021.
Driving a van is not the same as driving a car, even though both drive on the same driver’s license. Vans have different dynamics and usage characteristics than other vehicles that make them different, not only in terms of driving behavior but also in terms of accidents.
For all these reasons, from Monday 21 November to Sunday 27 November, the General Directorate of Traffic is launching a special campaign dedicated to the
surveillance of vans in which the checks of the agents of the Traffic Group of the Guardia Civil and the local police who join it will be established on all types of roads, especially conventional roads, since these are also the roads with the highest number of registered such as in areas close to shopping malls, industrial estates and loading bays, also taking into account that Black Friday is celebrated this week, which will increase the already high circulation of these vehicles used for goods delivery.
These checks check, among other things, the road safety aspects, the speed at which they were driving, the documentation of both the vehicle and the driver, the correct placement and weight of the transported load,
the presence of alcohol and/or drugs in the driver’s body or if it is current with regard to the Technical Inspection of Vehicles.
