British government sends asylum seekers to Rwanda

Date:

Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s plan would affect illegal migrants who arrived in the UK by boat or truck.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced an agreement with Rwanda on Thursday to send irregular immigrants and asylum seekers who have arrived in the United Kingdom to the African country.

The deal, worth €144 million, will mainly target men with no family members who arrive in the UK by boat or truck.

In the absence of confirmation of the details of the plan, Rwanda would take responsibility for these people who would start the asylum application process there. If this eventually succeeds, they can settle permanently in Rwanda.

As Boris Johnson pointed out this Thursday, it is a deterrent that will “change the way illegal immigration is tackled collectively.”

The move, criticized by opposition parties and non-governmental organizations helping refugees, is part of Boris Johnson’s aim to reform the immigration system to regain control of the borders after Brexit.
