Car thieves caused a tragic traffic accident in Chicago, Illinois, on Wednesday that killed two people and injured 16 others, some seriously. The driver of a stolen vehicle, a Dodge Charger, had speeded into oncoming traffic at a traffic light intersection and collided with seven cars.
The Dodge burst into flames in the horrific crash, killing the driver and passenger. The emergency services had to cut open the crashed cars. Seven children and nine adults were injured and taken from the vehicles to hospitals, four of the victims are in critical condition.
Driving at an intersection at high speed
The black Dodge Charger was traveling north at “very high speed” around 5 p.m. local time before hitting seven cars in the intersection, Chicago Police Chief David Brown said. He said the car had previously been reported stolen. A long handgun was found in the vehicle, Brown added.
“This is a very serious accident,” said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford. “I’ve seen a lot — and this is one of the worst,” he told local television station WLS-TV Chicago. This year alone, 100 people have died in traffic accidents in Chicago.
