Everything is dark – Marder was responsible for the power outage in Vorarlberg

Date:

In the early morning hours on Thursday, it was dark in the Vorarlberg municipalities of Wolfurt, Kennelbach, Lauterach and parts of the city of Bregenz. 6,200 households were without power for about 40 minutes. A marten was to blame.

According to information from Illwerke/vkw, the marten had probably crept into the Rieden substation and climbed onto a transformer there. He got caught up in the circuit. As a result, the protective shutdown of the substation became active.

The power failure was immediately noticed in the control room, says Christoph Burtscher of illwerke/vkw. The experts, who were sent directly to the substation, only had to remove the marten’s lifeless body and then put the substation into operation.

The whole thing lasted 40 minutes from 4:24 am, during which about 40 concerned citizens called the rescue and fire brigade. “Things like this don’t happen often, but they do happen,” Burtscher said. In the meantime, however, there is great concern among the population. The fear of a blackout is on the rise.
