A 20-year-old tried to escape a speed trap in Vienna-Wieden on Saturday morning. He drove off the Belt and into an alley, got stuck, tried to turn around, damaged parked vehicles and then crashed into a police officer.
The officer was not injured and was able to evade in time. “The police officer fired at a tire with the service weapon and jumped aside,” said police spokesman Philipp Hasslinger.
Driving down a side street
Police had conducted speed traps on the Wiedner Belt. As the vehicle was about to stop, the driver ignored the stop signs and ran into the side street.
No injuries
Only after the shot was the driver stopped shortly afterwards near Gumpendorfer Straße. He allowed himself to be arrested without resistance. “No one was injured in the whole incident. The 20-year-old is in police custody,” Hasslinger said. The Vienna Criminal Investigation Service – branch office Mitte has taken over the investigation.
