Leisure time by the sea & Co. – Despite the price increase, no savings are being made on holidays

Date:

Despite the wave of inflation, we are moving further and further away. We spend an average of 2,073 euros per person for a stay at the sea, lake or mountain. The first trends in surveys and bookings show where things are going this year.

Winter still has a firm grip on us, but plans are already being eagerly made for summer. According to the current “Ruefa Travel Compass”, Austrians are not impressed by the wave of inflation. Whether we travel by car, plane, ship or train: on average we spend 2,073 euros per person on travel. The Tyroleans are at the top with 2,414 euros. To save money, people often resort to the low season.

Beaches on the North Sea and the Baltic Sea are very popular
The sea remains the dream destination for one in two people, preferably in Italy and Croatia, with families in particular opting for cheaper sun spots in Albania and Montenegro. Germany takes third place. In addition to culture and wellness, the beaches of the Baltic Sea and the North Sea with the famous island of Sylt attract visitors here. Tourists are increasingly opting for cooler alternatives to the hot south.

When it comes to long-distance travel, Austrians are not deterred by Donald Trump or Elon Musk. 16 percent fly to the US. Thailand comes in second place. Japan, Vietnam, the Arab Emirates and the Maldives are increasingly booked.

In total, comparable to 2024, Austrians plan an average of 19 days for their relaxation, usually spread over two or three holidays.

In addition to wellness and city escapes, sustainable tourism, adventure travel, culinary delights and destinations off the beaten tourist track are very popular.

Transfer to bus and train
Going on holiday sustainably is often more difficult than you think. From the journey to the stay and consumption in the holiday paradise – the CO₂ balance can quickly skyrocket. If you do not want to give up protecting the environment despite your holiday, you can save a lot of greenhouse gases upon arrival: “If you travel by train or bus, you consume 5 times less CO₂ than by car and even 8 times less CO₂ than by car. times less than by car or plane,” says Hannah Keller, climate and energy expert at GLOBAL 2000.

When you arrive at your holiday destination, there are no limits to the climate-friendly options: just take public transport instead of a taxi, enjoy regional cuisine and enjoy long walks.

If you don’t want to miss out on souvenirs, avoid souvenirs made from endangered species such as coral, exotic leather or ivory. Anyone who then travels home by bus or train can be assured that their holiday trip has been designed as sustainably as possible in the interest of the environment.
