Three migrants survived 11 days at sea on the rudder blade of an oil tanker. The men were on their way from Nigeria to the Canary Islands. They were taken to hospitals.
According to the Spanish rescue service, the ship arrived from Lagos in Nigeria on Monday at the port of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria.
The three men spent the entire journey on the huge rudder blade, with the water almost up to their feet, as shown in the photos.
Already 1500 dead in October
Despite the danger to life, many people dare to cross the open Atlantic Ocean from Africa to the Canary Islands and thus to the EU, usually in small boats. The UN counted nearly 15,000 arrivals through November of this year. The UN agency for migration (IOM) recorded more than 1,500 dead or missing at sea in October. However, the number of unreported cases is likely to be higher.
