A man was recovered from a Roman excavation site on Michaelerplatz among the ruins in central Vienna on Tuesday morning.
After an emergency call from a witness, the professional fire brigade and professional rescue service arrived on the scene shortly after 05:00. A firefighter, using a pulley and a revolving ladder, climbed down to the man who lay about five meters deep in the ruins.

It is currently unclear whether the man wanted to climb into the half-height wall of an enclosed excavation or fell for some other reason. When emergency services arrived, the man responded quickly. However, due to a language barrier, the emergency services could not figure out how the accident could have happened.
The approximately 50-year-old had “bruised his hip when he fell,” said a spokesman for the professional rescue service. He refused further medical care.
