The European Parliament fires Vice President Kaili, who is accused of taking bribes from Qatar

Date:

This decision does not prevent the Greek socialist from continuing to occupy her seat as a member of the European Parliament, despite her arrest and waiting to appear before a judge on Wednesday.

The European Parliament is determined to segregate all people involved in the ‘Qatargate’ corruption scandal, which is related to this Gulf country’s alleged bribes to relevant people of the institution to influence its economic and political decisions. The plenary of the European Parliament, which is meeting in Strasbourg these days, dismissed the chamber’s vice-president, Greek socialist Eva Kaili, on Tuesday over her alleged involvement in this plot. The result of the vote is resounding, 625 votes in favor and only one against his resignation.

The Conference of Presidents took this same decision ‘unanimously’ early in the morning and needed the support of the majority of the chamber to move forward. Community agency president Roberta Metsola has already suspended Vice President Kaili from all duties at the time of her arrest last weekend. And during Monday’s hearing, he announced that he would go ahead with his resignation to “protect the integrity of this room.” “There will be no impunity. We will conduct an internal investigation and we will not sweep anything under the rug,” he added, announcing that he will promote reforms to improve transparency and scrutiny within the European institution.

After the vote, Metsola assured on his social networks that “on the basis of the open investigations, the European Parliament has decided that Eva Kaili is no longer one of its vice-presidents. The decision takes effect immediately. We will continue to fully cooperate with national and judicial authorities.”

However, this decision does not prevent the Greek socialist from continuing to occupy her seat as a member of the European Parliament, despite her arrest and waiting to appear before a judge on Wednesday. However, she lost her immunity when she was arrested “red-handed”. According to the Belgian press, the MEP was carrying “bags full of money” when she was intercepted by Belgian police. The investigations continue and the number of searches in different parts of Brussels has already reached twenty, after the investigating officers seized a dozen computers in the offices of the European Parliament.

At the moment, four more people have been charged in this alleged Qatari bribery scheme: Kaili herself, an MEP, a former MEP and a parliamentary assistant. During the police action, the officers seized some 600,000 euros in cash found in the home of former MEP Pier Antonio Panzeri and, according to sources close to the investigation cited by the Belgian newspaper ‘Le Soir’, some 150,000 Euros in the Vice President’s apartment In addition, shortly afterwards, police arrested her father while he was carrying a suitcase containing some 600,000 Euros in banknotes, according to the same sources.
