A massive explosion has occurred on one of Russia’s main gas pipelines. According to Russian media, at least three people were killed.
Before the fire, work was said to have been done on the pipeline in the Chuvash Republic, about 650 kilometers east of Moscow. The circumstances are currently under investigation. According to the local authorities, the fire that started after the explosion has now been extinguished. The gas flow is interrupted.
The Urengoy-Pomary-Uzhgorod natural gas pipeline is one of Russia’s most important natural gas export pipelines and is currently the main route for Russian gas to Western Europe. The pipeline is named for its origins in the Urengoy gas field in northern Western Siberia, the village of Pomary in the Republic of Mari El, where a compressor station is located before crossing the Volga, and the city of Uzhgorod in western Ukraine.
