The mayor of the French mountain resort of Saint-Gervais, Jean Marc Peillex, reported two young climbers spending the night in tents on Mont Blanc and then uploaded a video of their experience to the YouTube channel Instinct Sauvage. According to Peillex, known for his strict course to protect Mont Blanc, the two alpinists violated an October 2020 prefect decree.
This established a protection zone for the natural habitat of the mountain. Any kind of camping has since been banned on Europe’s highest mountain.
“True Expedition”
The mayor complained in a press release on Thursday about a “real expedition” by the two climbers, which lasted nine days, was carefully prepared and with the sole purpose of spending a night in a tent on Western Europe’s highest peak between Italy and France.
The mayor’s complaint, lodged with the gendarmerie of Saint-Gervais, is also directed against the sponsors of the young climbers “for complicity”. The mayor called on the prefect to also report the climbers and expressed the hope that environmental groups would follow suit.
The 45-minute video of the two alpinists currently has just over 1,500 views and has been online since November 20. The mayor said he only found out last Monday.
