Heavy rainfall in Bali complicates the search for a heroic Lower Austrian who came to the aid of a German tourist in the sea and was then unable to get out of the water himself.
“Weather conditions are getting worse by the hour. It rained heavily – from morning to afternoon. It is quite dangerous for the searchers, but we are still doing our best to find the missing,” said Balinese operations coordinator Putu Cakra Negara. As the “Krone” reported, Lower Austrian Matthias M. showed his heroism with his have to pay for life.
According to eyewitnesses, the 42-year-old rushed with a German to help a troubled holidaymaker (also an Austrian, according to local media) into the water at Diamond Beach on the small island of Nusa Penida off the coast of Bali. As he made it to shore alive, the violent waves swallowed the two rescuers and dragged them out into the open sea.
Hope fades
A rescue operation was immediately launched – but this failed for days. “We search with different boats and divers. There are also teams on the lookout from the cliffs,” says Putu Cakra Negara. The hope of finding the two missing is dwindling by the hour…
