According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the Russian attack on Ukraine has led to the largest refugee movement since World War II. The magnitude and speed are unprecedented in the history of flight and expulsion since 1945, it said in a statement on Sunday.
“More than 7.9 million people have fled the country and another 5.9 million have been displaced within Ukraine,” said UNHCR representative in Germany, Katharina Lumpp. Mathematically, nearly 14 million people correspond to more than a third of their home country’s total population of about 41 million.
Lumpp paid tribute to German support for the UNHCR. With more than 507 million euros in 2022, Germany made its largest financial contribution to date and is again the second largest donor in the world after the US. “Thanks to these funds, we can help refugees find safety and protection and support them in many ways,” said the UNHCR representative.
Nearly eight million in Europe
In Europe alone, the number of Ukrainian refugees has reached nearly eight million. UNHCR on Thursday recorded a total of 7,915,287 registered refugees from Ukraine across Europe, including 90,994 who received temporary protection in Austria as displaced persons.
